Welcome Back!

Welcome Back! It's been a great first couple of days with the 7th and 8th graders. We have a great group of students and we can't wait to get started!

For all the newcomers, this blog is updated once a week, usually on Monday evenings. I post all of the assignments here. Sometimes the due dates change, it's not set in stone, so stay on top of that planner of yours, students!! Hopefully this blog will give both students and parents a vision of what's going on in the classroom and remind you all about upcoming events. It also is helpful when a student is out sick.. he or she can check the blog if they miss a day due. I also enjoying taking pictures of the students and will post them here, as well.

So far, we have gone over all of the logistics in the classroom, what a typical day will look like, procedures, classroom jobs, responsibilities, and expectations. All of the not-so-fun housekeeping stuff.

We also sent home parent homework. I'm sorry parents.

Be on the look out for the Student Middle School Agreement, Parent Survey, a packet from the office, and a few syllabus. We also sent home a sample of the "Choose to be responsible" paper that is sent home with students if they are having a hard time following the expectations (I really hope this doesn't happen, but if it does, you know what to look for).

I (Ms.Shannon), sent home a syllabus for the math that your student is enrolled in. Please look it over, read it, and let me know if you have any concerns or issues... I'm here for you!

Then, sign it by Friday and send it in. This is mostly for the Algebra 1 Honors and Geometry Honors students. Since they are enrolled in a high school course, I want to be sure they are aware of the expectations and requirements.

I have been asked a few questions about calculators. While we will not use calculators extensively, I would like all students to have some sort of calculator for long calculations and to quickly check their work.

I highly recommend the investment of a "TI-84" calculator (its $80-$120), if your student plans to take a lot of math courses in high school and college. These calculators last forever and have a lot of functions! I like to teach students how to use the calculator, as this will help in future math courses. Especially in Algebra for graphing. If you can't cut it right now, that is OK. The other calculator that is great is a "Casio FX-55Plus Scientific Calculator - 10 Digits" and can be found on Amazon ($20). We won't need the calculators for a couple weeks, but by the end of September would be great!

Tomorrow we will be starting our normal routine schedule, transitioning through our subjects. There will not be a heavy homework load this week. We work our way back in to our routines.

A few things in the works....

Ms. Jenni and I are planning an out-of-state end of year trip, we are working through the ideas and will have an information session for you to attend one evening within the next couple of weeks. We are really pushing for student fundraising this year.

Tennis and Sailing club are happening soon. Tennis is 9-10am on Fridays and Sailing is 12-2pm on Monday. Please email us if you are interested.

Enjoy your week!
